4.0 out of 5 stars Good for backpacking, December 5, 2009

My son and I are in Scouts and have used this on several occasions. The components are light weight and fairly durable. They take fairly rough use and have some small dents and dings, which are not unusual for the lightweight cookware. The non-stick teflon coating seems durable and has not worn off. We pack a-lot of food inside the nesting cups and also fit our micro camp stove inside. The clear lid is durable and has perforations on one side that are useful for straining. The handle is well made and secures well to the pot and pan. Two of the mugs are insulated and have removable sip-lids that help keep the coffee, hot chocolate and soup warm and prevent you from burning your hands. The other two mugs/containers are not insulated. The set comes in a waterproof bag/pouch that we use for a sink when cleaning the dishes. The only reason we don't give it 5 stars is because we would like to see it a little stronger so it didn't ding as easy. The set is plenty big enough to cook... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Great MessKit, August 6, 2010

Took this bad boy out on 7 day camping/hiking/canoing trip and it performed great. We cooked on campstoves and open fire. We used it for everything from boiling water to making dirty rice to cooking pancakes. The insulated cups are good for morning coffee or hot choc and the bowls hold a healthy serving. The lids are very impresive. My dad used his lid over open fire several times and it held strong with no signs of weakening. Overall good mess kit.

I purchased this cook set in 2009, and have used it 10+ times, including two 5 day backpacking trips in Colorado, a 3 day trip at Dry Tortugas island, and plenty of 1 or 2 night camping trips. The set is fairly lightweight for what it is, and does pretty much anything you would want while backpacking(besides clean itself). Two of the cups come with an insulated cover, and two without. All four seemed to cope well with boiling hot liquids right out of the pot(no melting or scarring of the plastic). The plastic lid included is nice in that it also serves as a strainer for pasta and the like, and does a decent job, though now it doesn't work quite as well it used to(see below). Additionally, the non-stick coating on both pot/pan has held up nicely over the many uses; I haven't noticed any degradation in this aspect, though I do always make sure to use a plastic utensil and no metal when cooking.

First good bonus about this set is that the carrying case has a waterproof inner... Read more
