Key reason is that you can compress your sleeping bag into a smaller cylinder instead of a space-eating cannon ball. Also, when they say military surplus, they weren't lying. Mine not only came with faint wear signs, but had a USMC thing stuck to it. I would have cared, but this bag is as tough as nails. One thing anyone purchasing this thing should know, is that it's huge, as in too huge to cinch down if you have a more compact sleeping bag. It's true that it's heavier and larger than those made of ripstop nylon, but look at who it's made for! It's made to be tortured and abused by soldiers. Not gently stuffed, and tugged, packed, and protectivly hauled around. We use these for our bulky 20' and COLDER mummy bags. The sack is taller than we need for these bags, but the extra material can easily be folded down. The extra room could also be utilized for sleeping bag and bulky coats. The whole thing compresses a sleeping bag down to about the size of a basketball. The bonus is, I KNOW these straps aren't going to snap or tear from the fabric. It is made to hold the 3 pieces of the ECW sleeping bag that are rated down to -40. I've strapped it to the side of a rucksack and beat the tar out of it, and neither the bag or straps showed any signs of wear; it was as good as new after a trip through the wash. There is a separate, smaller compression bag the military uses for places that don't require the full ECW system, look for the 'patrol sleeping bag' and compression sack if this is what you need. |
